Roads for Life Post Incident Report

Issue 17 - September 2020

Dear friends,
I am reaching out to you 40 days after the terrible incident that has devastated our country. First and foremost, we offer our thoughts and reflections on the victims and hope that all affected families may find peace.

Our system is flawed but our people are talented and relentless. We salute all our doctors, nurses and paramedics who give all their energy working day in and day out. With our partners we will continue to do what we can to support our healthcare professionals and advocate for a better system. We also give thanks to each person in the community who acted swiftly and decisively to help their fellow citizens, and risked their lives to pull victims from under the rubble and acted as first responders as our entire system was put under immense pressure.

Throughout our mission we have long advocated for systems, processes and people to have the right tools and readiness for traumatic injuries. We sought the most advanced trauma care certifications in the hopes that our frontliners would be prepared for what was to come. The truth is none of us could have imagined such an incident would occur. We can only hope that our efforts in the past decade have helped our doctors, nurses, paramedics and civilians act swiftly and decisively.

In the hours that beset the tragedy and the horrors that passed, we found glimpses of hope and moments of selflessness. Our people deserve better and Roads for Life stands committed to our mission to ensure that in moments of tragedy, there is always hope.

Medical Supply for EMS

Thanks to the quick and timely response by the US Civil-Military Aid, Roads for Life assisted in the coordination and provision of medical supplies and equipment to its training recipients in the Lebanese Civil Defense, Lebanese Red Cross, and Beirut Fire Brigade. Over 500 Trauma First Aid Kits with their resupplies, as well as stretchers, emergency bandages, tourniquets and protective equipment were distributed in key centers designated by our partners to ensure they are put to optimal use.

Stop the Bleed

Our Launch of the Stop the Bleed program under the auspices of the American College of Surgeons has allowed us to expand our outreach in trauma education to civilians and bystanders. Alongside the massive response by Civil Society, Roads for Life has donated Stop the Bleed Kits to volunteers on the ground from NGO’s such as Offre Joie and Basecamp. This is in parallel to our efforts from our training partners from the Civil Military Cooperation of the Lebanese Armed Forces who have provided us access to train an audience that includes civilians in Ras Baalbak and Aarsal, remote areas that have historically been underserved.

Moving forward

Roads for Life is reaching out to all physicians, nurses, and paramedics who have benefited from our training and wants to extend a great deal of gratitude and appreciation. We are working in parallel with EMS services and the Syndicate of Hospitals to provide aid and assistance to Emergency Rooms across Lebanon, to support their efforts in this difficult period of our history.
